Winscombe Primary School

Class 4

Welcome to Year 4

Teacher - Miss Vertigans

LSA - Mrs Horwood and Mrs Griffin

Mrs Harding and Mrs Stevens

We have lots of helpers that come in and help during the week too! A huge thank you to Mrs Harding who teaches French and Mrs Worthy with music. Thank you to our handy reading helpers, Mr Cheater and Mrs Sharkey! Mrs Heatherington is our final helper, who comes and takes maths on a Thursday morning!

Homework is sent home on a Friday and is due in the following Thursday.

Please make sure PE kit is in school every day.

Now that we are in Year 4, we must remember to bring in:

  • Our reading records and book bags
  • A water bottle
  • Our packed lunch
  • P.E. kit

Our PE lessons are on a Wednesday and a Friday. Please make sure that you have your kit for these days, as it is very important that we all take part! An easier option would be to keep your kit in school at all times.

Have a look at what we are learning in term 1 and 2!

Slime experiment

Today we investigated the viscosity of slime and the state of matter it would be classified as. We found from our results that slime is a non-Newtonian substance and that it becomes a solid when pressure is applied to it but can also pour as a liquid! It was a fascinating lesson and it's safe to say that it got very messy!!

Dance Your Socks Off

This term, yearv4 have been practising and rehearsing for our annual Dance Your Socks Off performance. This was the 10th anniversary the project started and our theme was cultures from around the world. We chose an Ancient Egyptian theme! The children did really well on performance night and enjoyed it, especially the finale! A special thanks to Mrs Mistry who designed the costumes as well as Mrs Horwood, Mrs Harding, Mrs Stevens, Mrs Griffin and Mr Cheater who supervised the morning and the evening performance! 😊

Reading dog training day

On Thursday, Thatchers came in to provide workshops to the classes in KS2. The children learnt about different types of apples and tasted different samples of apple juice to tell the difference. It was great fun because we got to wear goggles and aprons during our testing! 😊

TERM 3/4

After a nice Christmas break, we returned back to school ready to learn all about our 'Mighty Mountains and Rushing Rivers' topic. We have lots of exciting learning in store, along with a much anticipated science week which we are all very excited about!

Year 4 have worked really hard to make their own Ancient Egyptian masks that the Pharaoh's would wear once mummified and put into a sarcophagus. The children came up with their own designs. Some of the children decided to make a mask for a Pharaoh whereas others decided to make masks suitable for the Egyptian gods! The children did this using card and paper mache to mould their projects. We then painted them in the style of Egyptian art! Well done!

Year 4 managed to complete their comic books all about Ancient Egypt. The children used Microsoft powerpoint and applied their ICT skills using transitions, animations, copying and pasting pictures as well as inserting hyperlinks. We then showed Year 1 (our reading buddies) our power points and they enjoyed them immensely.

Year 3 and 4 took part in Raise the Roof at Banwell Primary School. The aim of the performance was to recognise different cultures from around the world. Both year groups had been practising especially hard in time for the performance and did very well to enjoy themselves! Take a look at what we got up to during our time at Banwell!

The Elephant Ride

Still image for this video
We kickstarted the beginning of the academic year by learning about the Circus and performed the, 'Elephant Ride' as part of our school performance. We all greatly enjoyed putting on our acting hats!!

Autumn term (term 1 and 2)

We started off the term learning about our mini topic, The Circus. At the end of our two week topic, the whole school performed a circus themed poetry piece. Year 4 performed, The Elephant Ride by Julia Mainwaring-Barry. We came up with actions that we brainstormed as a class before we performed the poem in front of parents. We even held auditions for the role of the elephant and the tram!

As part of our topic, we are looking at the Ancient Egyptians.
